Uses
The dried herb is used to treat adult–onset, insulin-resistant diabetes. The herbs and roots are used as a kidney tonic and overall strengthener. (Moore 1990)
Curanderos use this plant to manage diabetes, kidney problems, fevers and, hangovers (Torres 2006).
Widely used in Mexico and Central America as a treatment for adult-onset insulin-resistant diabetes, as it stimulates glycogenesis in the liver, the formation of glycogen from blood glucose (Moore 1989). Also used for gastritis and is antiviral, particularly against adenoviruses and herpes simplex virus.
Found in the wild in rocky hills and among boulders in the southern desert mountains of New Mexico (Allred, Robert Dewitt Ivey, and Jercinovic 2020).
