The leaves can be chewed, removed from the mouth and applied to bites to stop itching. They can be used as snuff or made into a tea as a blood tonic. The dried bark can be boiled for ten minutes to make a decoction, used as a gargle, douche or enema for treating inflammation and skin problems, diarrhea or as a diuretic (Torres 2006).
